Paint additives – plasticizer

For what reason additives are used in the production of coating materials?
Additives to coating materials are used to improve certain properties of these materials, constraints, to impart or prevent certain chemical properties. The additive can perform different actions here.

What additives are used in the production of dispersion paints?
Preservatives are used in the production of dispersion paints, emulsifiers and protective colloids (thickeners), wetting agents, anti-foaming, promoting film formation, and optionally, depending on the type of binder, plasticizers. In addition, special anti-inflammatory salts are added to fire-retardant paints, and for fungicidal dispersion paints – fungicides.

Please explain how the plasticizer works
The plasticizer gets through, due to its dissolving power, between the binder or plastic particles, reducing intermolecular forces in these materials. In this way, binders and plastics become more flexible and ductile.

What is plasticizer migration?
Migration is the “wandering” of the plasticizer, that is, its separation from the substance.

What effects can plasticizer migration cause?
The effects depend on the direction of plasticizer migration and can be as follows:
1. Jeśli plastyfikator „ucieka” z powierzchni jakiegoś materiału, it is this surface that becomes brittle and generally cracks as a result.
2. Jeśli plastyfikator migruje w kierunku powierzchni materiału, it becomes sticky. Dirt sticks to it and it takes on an unattractive appearance.
3. Jeśli plastyfikator migruje z jednego materiału do drugiego, it is the giving material that becomes brittle, and the host – sticky.
